On the Model 30, I personally wouldn't like having to work over the fire box to tend to whatever I'm grilling - that just seems like too much heat to deal with, and cookin' in Houston's hot enough without working directly over the firebox. Knowing my tendencies toward, uh, klutzyness, I'd have a bunch of burns either on my arms or my stomach from leaning over to tend the meat. Maybe if the fire box was on the backside.... I agree with 1cajuncook, you'd really have to watch your fire and your meat due to the closeness of the two.
