I am buying a house that has the start of a built in barbecue in the back yard. There is some brickwork and gas piped to where the burners might be. What I would like to do is convert it to a combination grill/smoker.

I currently grill/bbq using gas (I know, blasphemy!) due to its ease of use. When grilling chicken or a steak, I'd like to stick with gas, simply because its fast and easy with no mess. But what I would like is an offset firebox for this outdoor built in that I could use when I want to cook ribs, pork shoulders, etc. Does anyone know of some designs/plans that are available online or in a magazine? Most of the masonry is done, but all the fixtures need to be put in: grates, lid, etc.

Any help out there?

Welcome to the group. Can you post a pic of the foundation your starting with?
If it aint broke, Break it!
Then rebuild it better.
