When to mop?

I have been reading a book by another BBQ afficianado and thougt I would put this to everyone for thier opinion.
Most of what I've read in Steve's books indicate to begin mopping every hour after about an hour of cooking time has elapsed.
In the new book I have been reading the author suggests that you should begin mopping every hour or when the lid is open after aproximately half of the cooking time has elapsed and the rub has set ( formed a crust).
What do you all think?

I usually wait at least two hours before I begin mop/baste/spraying in a smoker. This allows enough time for the rub to crust. Otherwise I've notice that some of the rub is washed off if you begin to mop/baste/spray any sooner.

Never had anything dry out from waiting this long.

Just like Bob, I wait about 2 hours before I use a mop on something that I am smoking and then about every 45 minutes to 1 hour there after. When grilling I use it about every 10 minutes or before and after I flip the meat.
