Last Saturday, we had our annual Cub Scout Family Camping trip at Camp James Ray on Lake Texoma. While most of the kiddos cooked hot dogs over the fire, I cooked pork chops for about 17 adults along with baked taters & corn cooked down in the coals. For dessert, I made a peach cobbler in the dutch oven and one of our other leaders made a blueberry cobbler in a dutch oven. We all went to bed with full bellies! :) Below are a few pics I thought I would share...

Great pics, tex_toby!

In the first pic, I see a nice looking campfire grill. Is that a store-bought grill, or handmade? It looks like it's made in part from rebar.
Unlike propane, you'll never wake up scorched and naked in another county because you mishandled a bag of briquettes.

It's homemade and pieced together, but it's a good'un! :) It's made from re-bar, giant drill bits and part of an old grate. My dad built it probably 20 years ago and its been on MANY campouts over the years. Here's a little better picture of it.

Nice job with a more rustic meal, Tex! Did you use a mix of charcoal and wood for cooking, or just add briquettes after the wood had pretty much burned down?

I started the fire with charcoal and added small amounts of wood. There really isn't a lot of campfire time , so we try to not make too big of a fire.

Your camping cookout looks and sounds like too much fun, Toby. What a menu! Seeing yours, I've got a craving for pork chops now myself and am decidedly going to get some tomorrow. And that is the neatest improvised pit. You even got beautiful grill marks with that! I bet you was the camp hero! :D

That looks like a blast and a fine looking meal, based on what you had to cook with. What's in the can? Beans?

Takes me back. I got my start cooking in scouting and spent 10 years with my sons in scouting. Nothing like the smell of bacon on an open fire on a crisp morning. Nothing.

How about fresh-brewed camp coffee over an open fire? I reckon that might be a really close second if not equally great... :twisted:
