Kansas City Restaurants

Hi guys,

I have a friend that will be at Scotts AFB for training and asked what good que joints are in the area. If you know it would be appreciated.

Scotts is in the St Louis area, about 4 hours away from KC...which area do you mean again?

LC's may be a no-go now though, they closed for health violation reasons and I've not driven by in a while to see if they had yet reopened.

Seriously? Ah man, that's not good. They had the most sublime beef brisket sandwiches. My favorite places back in the day were Gate's, Aurthur Bryants, and Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbeque.

About a 3 iron away fron Scot AFB is a town called O'Fallon IL, there Mike MIlls has a place called 17th Street Bar and Grill. Occasionally Mike himslf is there. Was there about 3 months ago (you have to get their Combo Plate) pulled pork, brisquet, pork ribs, beef ribs, and chicken with 2 sides and one free dessert. Also ask him to talk the manager, gave my wife and I a tour of the kitchen as well as the smokers thetY are very accomodating. Will also post website

In Kansas City there are quite few places I would recommend...

- Gates BBQ specializes in the Burnt Ends sandwich...commonly referred to as Burnt Ends on Bun. Be ready to order when you get the within 4-5 people of the cash register...AND NO CELL PHONES IN LINE.

- Oklahoma Joe's is an institution in the area. There are two of the now...but the first was seriously a food counter at a gas station. At lunch and dinner time the lines can get seriously long.

- Jack Stack - The only way I know to describe it is the Steakhouse of BBQ Joints. it is white tablecloth, friendly servers...and not cheap. But, for a nice dinner it is my favorite place on County Club Plaza. One of the things that must be tried is "King Rib". They take prime rib...leave the bone on...and smoke like a good rack of ribs. When they serve them there are usually a 3.5-4.5 ounces of meat around each bone. And the sides are excellent, I highly recommend the corn casserole. My personal favorite to order is to get the Jack's Best. It has one King Rib, Baby Back, and Burnt Ends with corn casserole and fries. They serve it on a silver platter. Yummmm!

The closing happened in February and I think it only lasted a week or so. This blog indicates that the restaurant has reopened.
