sealing the chargriller with oven braid gasket

I purchased one of those oven gasket kits that come with the oven braid and the high temp glue. I cut the gasket and applied the glue and stuck the gasket as instructions said to do it. I let it dry for 24 hours. The glue did not stick as all of the pieces have now fallen off. What's the trick?

There's a big ol' thread here explaining it. You have to sand off the paint on the area you want to put the glue. I think there's another type of glue to use instead of the one in a kit.
