Hay Guys, and Gals,

Are any of you owners of Medina River grill?

My CG is getting a little long in the tooth, so I checked out the new ones at lowes the other day. Sad Confused The new CG's are like a generic ripoff version of the old ones. what a shame.

So looking around at my options I ran across this thing.

http://www.backyardcity.com/grills/charcoal/HEW-Medina-River-Big-Daddy-Smoker-068.htm

It looks good, but I'd love a little feed back. A BGE, or a Ranch King, and a WSM are other ideas, but I'm more use to the SFB style smoker. Also posible is a home made brick grill/smokehouse build. I can probably keep th old CG working for at least another 6 months, maybe a year. So I have time for ideas, opinions, and comments.

Thanks in advance Very Happy

Mark

It's a nice looking smoker, but in my opinion,it's still pretty light gauge material for the price. Check these Gator pits out.I didn't check on shipping cost but it's a heavier unit for the price.

Oh stop it, there's nothing wrong with the new CGs. Especially considering the price difference. $100 to $700, ouch!

If your happy with it, buy one. But in my opinion, it's lower quality than the gills from 6 or 7 years ago when I got mine. seriously, the cast iron grates weigh half of what old grates did. Going stait from cleaning mine up, to looking at the new ones an hour later, you can really see the change. Still for $100 bucks it's an ok starter grill.

$700 is not all that much, a BGE can run over $1,000. I bet lots of folks of this board have a few thousnd invested in there rigs. Besids I want an upgrade Very Happy

Peace,

Mark

I still have a CG that's about 8-9 years old and one that's new. I haven't noticed a difference in grate weight. I'll check. I did notice the grates are a different configuration now. But, I definitely think half as much is a BIG stretch.

The gauge of steel on the barrel does seem to be a little lighter.

Still, for the quality of the food that comes off the CG, I think it's an excellent value.

I've would love to have one of the more expensive units, but there's no why I could swing $700 for a smoker unless it was making me money. The $400 units posted in the second link are much more tempting, but still a bit high, right now.

I have both an old style and a new style CG. There is a difference for sure. The grates are the most notable.

KMVET72 - to answer your original question, I think I would pass on that one. I have been in the market for a new heavy duty 1/4" pit myself and have been doing lots of comparing. After a few months of looking and comparing, I am having one built to my specs. That said, keep an eye out of craigslist for one. There are a lot of them on there and also a lot of people who custom build one. Put an ad on their yourself and see if anybody would custom build you one for that price. I did that and got a lot of replys. To me though, 16" pit just isn't big enough.

tex Cool

Well your asking about a multitude of products.. Some ranging over $1,000 down to $100 or so. You have to figure out what you really want to use your grill for, and how many people do you normally cook for?

For me, I'd look into going ceramic if it's in your budget. You can do low 'n slo, high temp cooks, baking, you name it. The temperature control is amazing, they are a miser on charcaol, and for me just an all around excellent product. I can do 100* to smoke cheese, or 1000* to sear a steak. I can cook all night with out having to add charcoal. Some guys claim they can go 24+ plus on a single load of charcoal allthough i have not done it myself. I went with BGE because of the quality of product, and the enormous support network. Also they have "eggfests" all over the US that are a fun to go to. Yes, i spent i think around 800 on a LBGE, with nest and stand. Your going to spend some money, but as the saying goes... you get what you pay for. Another reason why i got mine is that most people that own an egg, own more than 1. Some guys have 6. Eggheads are fanatical - almost a cult. Get one, you'll find out why.

Love my BGE. I want a small allready so i can cook at 2 different temperatures... Currently i've got a CG smokin pro, Weber Genesis, and Weber Q. Ok, the Q i gave to my inlaws, don't have that one any more. I bought the genesis abour 3 months before i got the egg. That was close to 800 as well. Haven't used it once since then. When i bought the CG, i though how great it would be to have all that room to grill. Guess what? Takes alot of charcoal to heat up that much space. I don't know about you, but i wasn't cooking for 100 people every weekend. Now if you are, then that's a better fit for you. But if you're just cooking mainly for family / friends, a LBGE, or other ceramic will do just fine. If i'm not mistaken i think Phillyjazz has a Grill Dome. Maybe he can chime in on his thoughts of GD. Anyways, back to work. Just my .02.

Same here, Mark. I have a UDS for when I want to do a long cook but don't want to tinker with the fire, but I love my offset. I have no complaints about my CG, but when I wanted to buy better I went with the thicker steel. The only factor wind has on my cooks is when I got the SFB facing it, so I just turn the smoker. I got the Brinkmann Cimmaron from Bass Pro on clearance plus a 10% discount and have been very happy with that smoker. I paid less, but I do not have the verticle chamber like that pit has. The similar model as Bass Pro with the verticle chamber runs of $1000. So if that one is quality made, then it looks like a good deal to me.

Plus FREE Shipping! If my Cimmaron was not available in store, I was looking a a few hundred to ship it.

Brinkmann Cimmaron

That's the model I was thinking of. It's 1/4 inch steel and holds temps well from what I've heard. It's pricey, but still less than a grand.

A gator pit for less than a grand would be nice, too.

IMHO: Char Griller is still the best you can get for such a low price. If you are looking at spending $700-1000 then of course you are in a different category. Like others stated here you can build a UDS for under $100. Why not spend a little more and go for the LANG.
