Mods done:
- SFB coal basket support, non-fixed and removable
Great Idea for a quick and removablr fix for the basket support, please enlighten those wondering on the deminisions of the bars. I also use the same basket from Lowes. _________________ Ken Thomas

You bet!
Take a look at this pic:
You can see the angle just sitting on the curved walls of the SFB. They are easily "moveable" and removeable as needed.
The legs are facing down, and the "point" is facing up, like so: ^
With the legs facing down, you have a fairly stable bar making contact with SFB walls in 8 places, 4 per angle.
I used 1/2" x 1/2" angle (not cold formed), bought a (if I remember correctly) 40" long piece, standard stock from Lowe's, pre-cut length. I cut it into two 14" pieces, which I may trim down another half-inch or so until it's just about an inch above the ash pan; right now it's about 1.5"-2" above the pan. I haven't used the SFB yet, so I won't trim the bars until I am sure I need to.
The other thing I need to do is paint the bars with high-heat grill paint. This will likely be something done at regular intervals to prevent excessive rust buildup as the paint will be removed during high-heat cooks (and for sure before winter storage).
I will also be (slightly) rounding the tips of the angle legs to minimize the potential scratch damage to the SFB walls.

| Old Smoker wrote: | | Quality wise,IMO,a little better than fair. The BTU's aren't real high, but like kiiski stated, very good for keeping sauces and small pans hot., on the flimsy part, seems most of that comes from the side of the CG itself,as we all know, the walls aren't very thick. and when you wiggle it up and down, you see the wall moving. My biggest problem was getting it level.I had to put some washers under the bottom edge to bring it up. but I really think it was worth the money. Also kiiski is right about taking it off the burner once the coals start to glow, someone told me the element may not stand up to the heat. It's also much cleaner to use than news paper, no ash blowing all over. |
I picked up a side gas burner today at Lowe's. I was surprised that they have tweaked the design a little (at least from the pics I have seen). I will try to get a pic tomorrow.
As for the quality I think I got $25 worth. It does what it is supposed to do and does it well. It really makes quick work of lighting a chimney and no paper ash flying everywhere. My wife is gonna love that! _________________ If you're lookin' it aint cookin'

Do you happen to have the lowes model ot item # as it is not a stock item here in NC. When I go to the chargriller site they refer me to Lowes..
Thanks
PS...could someone direct me how tomake the boxes around the quotes?

There are buttons for qouting someone over their post. Also there are buttons for creating a quote box when typing a message to post. Click once before the quote and click again at the end of the quote. The slash "/" charactor signifying "close" MUST be at the end of the qoute or it won't work. _________________ Ken Thomas

Been gone for a little while. A few days after I posted I went back to Texas to set up some fireworks shows (and eat all I could while I was there).
Thanks for the info on getting a cover for the grill. I ended up getting the Char-Griller cover for it. It fits great and haven't had any problems with it flying off (yet).
I appreciate all of the warm welcomes and look forward to many hours in front of the BBQ. _________________

| Hey all, I got a CG Smokin Pro for Father's Day and I love it. I have smoked 2, 9 lb Briskets, and 4 racks of ribs. And also grilled salmon, beef fajitas, some steaks, and burgers. This weekend I will be making some more Brisket and ribs for my inlaws, as they come into town. I have not done any mods but after reading some other posts I might do the chimney mod. But everything has come out great so far. |

I am new to the board as a member but have read through all your suggestions and modifications for the Char-Griller and it inspired me to completely refurb. my CG and add accessories and modifications to make it a better all around smoker.
I have a web page documenting this project at:
http://gryniewski.com/chargriller.htm
The project is nearing the end and I will post the final pics and let you all know how it went... take a look and please tell me what you think and thanks for all your ideas!
Below is a pic from the start of the project - many more pics and documentation at: http://gryniewski.com/chargriller.htm

Welcome to the board ski-bbq!
The ol' CG looks like she's coming along beautifully!
I can't wait to see the second half of the refurb and the finished product!
Great job!
The only problem I can see if the holes in the SFB basket are a bit small like you said, but it looks like it could take a direct hit from a cruise missle... _________________

Thanks for the welcome and kind words. The charcoal basket design has definately come into question. It will take a hit from a large war head and be fine as you said but will it function?
My backup plan on that is to get the old 1/2" drill out and bore a bunch of holes in a pattern of some sort on the botom - maybe some of the sides also - not sure.
When it comes time to fire up the smoker on the test runs I will see how that basket works out and post my results,
I asked them to make it out of expanded metal and this is what I ended up with - but they were so nice and did it for free in their spare time at work so I am not going to even mention to them that it may have a design flaw.... I will just modify as needed.

| You may need to open up those holes to allow the ashes to fall, otherwise they may smother your coals. |
