Well, after this many guesses, Steven sent me this letter...

"Dear Grillslinger,
They are all wrong. I am in a standard McDonald's kitchen in Schenectady.

Mugs and dishes,
SR"

Just kiddin'...I'll say it's Tacos al Pastor . . . in mexico....just to be challenging.

A.

Steven is in Athens, Greece, across the street from the central food market, about to have some gyro, thinly sliced, seasoned lamb roasted on a vertical rotisserie (hence the name gyro--just like the English word "gyroscope")

When browned and crusty, the lamb is cut off the roast in paper thin slices, and piled on pita bread with thick Greek yogurt. The beauty of the system is that you always get an end cut.

Great guesses everyone, and there will be more to come, so keep an eye on the blog.

I would say Greece. It looks like Gyros.

The stuff looks like shawarma to me. Probably Lamb. Syria, Lebanon or Greece.

**Update**

In case you were waiting for the name of the restaurant, it's

Bouloukos (which means "Chubby's")
53 Athens St. (across from the Athen's central meat market)
