Sammy’s

So what do you do when it’s the first night of Hanukah and you’re on book tour? I took the family to the ultimate Jewish restaurant, Sammy’s Roumanian on the Lower East Side.
You may remember reading about the grilled pickled peppers and garlicky grilled skirt steak at Sammy’s in BBQ USA. Well, here’s another grilled specialty–a plate burying veal chop with a bone the size of a billy club.
Dinner at Sammy’s is a little like wandering into a bar mitzvah and even if you’re not Jewish, it’s terrific fun. Sammy’s Roumanian is located at 157 Chrystie Street in New York (tel. 212-673-0330)
