To get back to the topic...

I prefer to close the lid ONLY after I have seared both sides with a nice cross hatch. I prefer my steak Medium - medium well. I get the color from the first searing, and allow the steak to "bake" a little bit. I ALWAYS have a metal bowl full of water on the grill when I close it though. In my mind it helps keep the steak juicy. I don't know if it actually does - but it works for me!
