I bought a Brinkmann horizontal smoker/grill last year that now has some rust on it. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to protect it? Can I scrape off the rust and safely repaint it?

Use some C.L.R. and a scrub brush, if it's really deep sand it w/ some fine metals grade sandpaper, then paint with high temp black paint which you'll find in just about any hardware store. WHat a shame it's rusting after only a year. Maybe buy yourself a cover for it. I used to have a Brinkman water smoker for years and replaced it with a Weber Smokey Mountain and am very pleased.

Thor,

Welcome to the Board. I would agree with Airfoil on how to fix the rust, and would highy suggest a cover for the smoker. Brinkman sell them, and they are worth the cost.
