Smokebox for char-griller

Hey fellas ; could someone please tell me if installing the side box on char-griller is an
easy task? I have to cook 3 shoulders on fri nite and Im wondering if I can do it in an hr. or
so? I have average mechanical skills. he he.

If you have a drill.... I think it still takes longer. I tried to do it without one... it didn't work. I also wasn't ready for it. It took me about 2 hours. Though, I am a little slow on the mechanical side of things...

it's pretty simple. i used a hammer and sharp cold chisel to break the welds of the main opening and then a phillips head and hammer to knock out the little holes, with the use of a drill to get rid of one that wasn't punched well.

if you're of decent shape (no offense, Z... ), you can hang it yourself by getting it in position and then inserting one of the center screws first to provide support while you get the others in. nothing to it.

Man, I beat on one of those stupid openings for like 45 minutes. I finally realized we still had my mother-in-law's drill at our house, and drilled it out. The rest of it went pretty fast. I used to work as a machinest, so I still have a decent build. Where raw strenth was needed (knocking out the big openings) things went really quick. It was those little holes that screwed me up. I also did it all by myself, and that probably took longer, as well.

These are the steps that I took:

1. Take off the left hand side rail.
2. Place the grill on the left hand end.
3. Use a drill to make holes in the pre-punched spots (easier than hammering them and causes less bending).
4. You can now knock out the side plate. Make sure that you do this or you will not get much heat into the main chamber.
5. Place the smoker box on top of the grill. This is easy as it is standing on the end and you do not need anyone else to help.
6. Install the bolts, spacers, and bracket.
7. Re-install the side rail.
Done.
The main part was to remove the side rail so that the cooker could be on its end for ease of installation as well as using the drill.

Should be able to complete in an hour.
Start smoking!

Between powertools and a 5 pound hammer there are very few problems in life that can't be fixed.

Good tip RJ. I'll be putting mine together soon. I'll take the northern tools add to lowes. The $20 I save will get me the cover for it. I was surprised that Lowes had the covers. If they only had the Weber chimney starters. They just had the cheapies. Oh well, Sears has the Weber's & i'm gonna buy 2. Happy grillen

Actually, you should save $30. $20 off of the price and the 10% (for a lower price) of the total gives you $10 more dollars. So you can have the cover and on chimney starter with your savings! Make sure you mention the extra 10% savings for finding a lower price.

Hey Sarge,

Check to make sure the grill's wheels are on the correct side. When putting the main grill section together, I followed the picture that was with those instructions. But, when I got to the side fire box, they had the wheels on the other side. It was no big deal to change them, but it added to the overall installation time. I guess if you get in a pinch for time, you could always change them later.

The last message was mine. Does anyone else have problems logging in or is just me? It seems I have to log in twice each time.

Sarge - FYI - the wheels go on the opposite side of the firebox.

I had problems knocking out those little holes! I ended up using a drill to just drill it. Should have done that to begin with. Much easier.

So the wheels go opposite side of the firebox? Dang it! I have to go home and change it! Personally, the instructions and pictures weren't always on the same page.

arggggggggghhhh..... stoopid wheels are on the wrong side! no wonder there's a handle on the smoker box and i kept thinking that pulling it by the flimsy shelf was absurdly wrong, while dragging the non-rolling legs by the smoker handle seems a bit, uhm, "odd". i even installed them wrong (actually correctly) in the beginning and then went back and switched them. i built it and the smoker box all at once, so did i confuse myself with the pictures on each box being oh so similar yet oh so slyly, confusingly wrong?

i've got spareribs smoking right now, along with some habaneros, so i think now may not be a good time to flip it over.... working out of a home office has it's bbq advantages.

maybe i should change my license plate to BUCK I STOOPID? IQ seems a bit too smart at this point. (michigan fans need not weigh in....)

oh, and regarding the log-in problems, yes it takes me 2 times to log-in every time.
