I've done the charcoal basket mod using the Charbroil Shaker basket from Lowe's, and two threaded rods plus a few washers and wingnuts.

Here's a picture:

Guys, what are the dimensions of the basket that you all are using? I'm thinking about making one just need the didmensions so I can cut out the metal.

Cheers!

The standard Weber kettle is chrome
so I think you're OK.

i have only seasoned the sfb.

still studying this sfb mod thing...

i'm thinking of going with the lowes basket instead of the big expanded metal one.

i want the good air flow and ash clearance.

i really want to preserve the sfb paint as long as i can...smaller fire?...someone here lined the top with metal

but i dont want to put more holes in the pristine top!

it looks so great outside all sprayed up with pnut oil!

i want the longest burn possible...not looking for long 10 hour butt burns tho

Just to jump in here.

The paint is gonna burn off.
It's a fact. Both of my offsets
have burned it off and they
are a LEAST 5 times thicker
metal than the CG.

One of them is going on 14 years old now
so the failure rate due to rust is a non issue.

I'd be more concerned about rust
than paint burning off.

I paint them with Pam or the
Sam's Club equivalent after a
cook while still quite hot
They both look like seasoned
cast iron on the outside
with no rust issues.

I just made a 12x12 with expanded steel and it does not fit in the fire box. It's too big. I get the basket inside the firebox but can not close. It may be perfect if it's 10 x 10. Now I gotta look for other ways to make the basket as I don't have the tools to cut up expanded steel. I was doing it with a hand saw. Not going to do that again.

How tall are the sides? Where are you placing the basket such that the lid on the SFB doesn't close. I ask because mine is 12 x 12 x 6 and it fits just fine. I put 1" straps that sit just above the rails to hold the basket and it leaves room for the lid to close.

The sides are 6" tall. The basket sits at the lowest point possible inside the firebox. I even removed the ash pan and still does not fit due to the curvature of the fire box itself. Now, I can see that a 11x11x5 may fit.

Well, took the 12x12x6 basket to local metal shop and the guy "shrinked" it down to 10x10x5. Now it fits.
