OK, here's a poser for anyone wishing to respond.

While visiting the neighbors for a small cook out, we got into the discussion of what type of woods we like to use to smoke with. We started discussing hickory when one of the neighbors stateed that only certain types of hickory should be used. Being in the Midwest, the most common type we see in the woods is Shagbark. This guy says Shagbark should not be used.

I have never heard of this. I always thought hickory wood is hickory wood. But, I can't say I have ever gone out and chopped down a Shagbark hickory to know if this guy is right or not. Any wood specialists out there know about this?

BTW, it was pretty much agreed upon that most of us like a combination of hickory and one of the fruit trees (apple, cherry, or peach).

A quik google turned up these.... Sounds like he is full of it :lol:

Shagbark Hickory (Carya ovata)
Its "green" wood (or sometimes seasoned but freshly-wetted wood chips) is also sought after for the smoking of meats, especially pork meats.

The Shagbark Hickory tree has many uses, some of them include: sports equipment, furniture, or as a smoke wood for meats.

The wood also makes excellent firewood, and often is used in smoking meat.
