Best Joint: Bills Barbecue
Where: many locations, Richmond, VA
What: Pork and beef bbq
Why: This one's a tough one. This isn't the best BBQ in the world, and yet it's a favorite of mine. The two types of BBQ are both very mild, served on a soft bun. The chain offers shoestring fries and a lot of sides and pies (!). The real reason I'm putting Bill's into play is that it is a taste of Southern, Virginian fast/road food from 30 or 40 years ago. That is, as the Redneck Trash cookbook would say, it "fills you up and satisfies you too". If you haven't grown up with it (BTW, my wife has nothing good to say about it), it might not hit the spot. If you did, this is about the only place you can go anymore for this type of cooking.
Added bonus: MacLean's, on Parham Road. A real, honest-to-goodness southern diner. The wife loves the roe and salt herring! "The biggest breakfast in town" is no idle boast. Try the biscuits and sausage gravy, too.
