1st trip to KC, leaving Friday, help!!!

Hello, I had a last minute trip to Kansas City come up for this weekend. Leaving early Friday morning and have all day to eat and tour. I am looking for detailed subjective opinions on BBQ restaurants there. Not just "this one is good and that one is bad", I want to know what and why.

So far on my list are (in no particular order) - Arthur Bryants, Danny Edwards, Gates, Jack Stack, and BB's Lawnside. Are there any I am missing?

Obviously I won't be able to order everything on the menu at all of these. I am looking for suggestions on what to order if you were in my situation. So far in my research I've heard good things about burnt ends and short ribs at Arthur Bryants, brisket at Danny Edwards, and just about everything at Jack Stack (including sides of onion rings & beans). Who does a really great chicken? What about pulled pork?

I don't know about the Q out there, but if you want a good steak, head down to the Golden Ox.

Welcome aboard, GenuQ. There all sorts of good BBQ places in KC. If you go to Jack's Stack, then you must order the beans. I'm sorry, it's required in KC to do this or else they'll kick you out . But seriously, they are worth it. I'd recommend going to their location in Martin City. Arthur Bryants is always a good choice, though I've only eaten at their original location and not the one in the casino up north. There you have to get the burnt ends - or at least try some. I haven't eaten at Gates in many years. Back in the 70's it was good BBQ. Then it went downhill in the 80's and I haven't been back since. I've heard they've improved, but I haven't tried it.

For years I've been trying to remember the steakhouse my wife and I ate at where we had practically the best steak I've ever eaten. The Golden Ox was the restaurant for sure!!! Because it seemed to ring a bell, I Google’d it and took a look at the aerial view and that's the place. It sure doesn't look like much of a restaurant from the outside, in fact, if you don't know where it is... it is easy to miss. The steaks are aged, tender and flavorful. Now that I know the name of the place we'll be eating there again!

I grew up in KC and everyone has their favorite,but you can't go wrong with Gates or Arthurs. Go to Gates near the plaza or the original Arthurs. Jack Stack I'm conflicted on, great place to have a nice meal with your wife, but not a BBQ joint.
