 Many people have written to ask what sort of training Steven did to prepare for a life in barbecue. You might be surprised to learn that he graduated with a degree in French literature from Reed College in Portland, Oregon. That he specialized in medieval French literature. (So that’s why there’s so much history in Steven’s barbecue books.) A reporter from Steven’s alma mater came through the other day to write a story on Steven for the Reed College Alumni Magazine. This shot was taken in his office. Yes, he loves 60s psychedelic music—the posters over his head are for the Miller Blues Band and the Jefferson Airplane.
