Nostalgia time.
At the risk of sounding older than I care to, when I was growing up in Baltimore, we sometimes bought watermelons from horse-drawn produce wagons. I recently returned to my hometown and I’m not a little amazed to report that the horse-drawn produce wagon is still alive and flourishing.
This photo was taken outside the Edgar Allan Poe house on North Amity Street. (Poe spent much of his writing career in Baltimore.) So what do you do with the watermelons? Try the watermelon salsa on page 685 of BBQ USA, or the drunken watermelon on page 739.
